PCB Design Tips: Get It Right the First Time and Save Time & Money
Designing a PCB that works perfectly on the first fabrication run isn’t luck it’s process. Every re-spin costs time, money, and sometimes reputation. Whether you’re building a prototype or preparing for mass production, a disciplined validation flow can dramatically reduce errors. 1. Don’t Skip the Basics (Run ERC & DRC )

- Layer alignment (Top/Bottom copper, mask, silk)
- Missing or extra layers
- Correct board outline and dimensions
- Drill files aligned with pads/vias
- Solder mask openings (no unintended mask over pads)
- Silkscreen readability and not overlapping pads
- Copper pours and clearances

3. Don’t Ignore the Manufacturer’s DFM Report
Once you submit your design, most PCB manufacturers run a DFM (Design for Manufacturability) check often they have free tools that can be accessed using their website. This is not optional feedback it’s critical.
DFM checks typically include:
- Minimum trace/space violations
- Drill-to-copper clearance
- Annular ring issues
- Solder mask slivers
- Acid traps and copper islands
- Panelization concerns
- Footprint missed match
Ignoring DFM warnings because “it worked before.” Even if a board can be fabricated, poor DFM can lead to:
- Low yield
- Reliability issues
- Assembly defects
